interior future, adaptive reuse, interior sustainability

People have been restricted by the pandemic lockdown. Our private zone becomes a place that emerges multi-functions, like living, working and entertaining. However, habits have been formed and intensely influenced our life and behaviour. It conducts a new living style and constructs a new perception of interiority. The project investigated the aspects of human behaviour that changed during the pandemic, driving the idea of flexible and functional interior design in a new era. Suggesting our living, behaviours and needs have gradually followed the forms of space. Exploring and motivating the idea of design for universality and function diversity. It frames a new concept of future interior design, which expands opportunities for interiors’ transferability, durability, and sustainability.

The quote 'We shape our tools, and our tools shape us.' by Marshall McLuhan (philosopher) becomes the direction of the project by applying to interior design, questioning how the form impacts our living. From the idea of flexibility, Metabolism in interior architecture, I have proposed a modular building system. People could decide and build their own living structure, furniture and decorator etc, which they can also deconstruct and function freely.

Metabolism is a strong and innovative idea launched in the past. It seems successful and bravely build to introduce to the world. However, as time passed, it gradually shows that might not work well in architectural aspects. However, through the proposal, the scheme benefits the perspective of sustainable development in the future. I believe it would make difference and impact the next generation and the interior architecture industry.

Flexibility is a significant value growth benefit to our living environment. Deeming flexible is not only used on functions and zoning but the internal impact on human life. It will be a positive effect, which make people consider more about the quality of living. By rethinking the purpose of living, and how the interior shapes our lives, we develop our own flexibility in our space, and then achieve our individuality through our living environment.

"We shape our tools, and our tools shape us"
